Method

Formula used

The estimate adds vertical U distance, side-to-side movement when required, front/rear routing when selected, patching allowance, and controlled slack. The result is rounded up to the nearest practical stock cable length.

Route length = vertical run + horizontal allowance + front/rear allowance + patch allowance + controlled slack

Why not always choose a longer patch cord?

Longer cords may feel safer, but excessive slack creates congestion, restricts airflow, blocks ports, and makes troubleshooting slower.

Does this replace on-site verification?

No. This is a planning estimator. Always verify the real route, cable managers, rack depth, bend radius and front/rear access on-site.

Can I use this for cabinet-to-cabinet patching?

This calculator is focused on one-rack patching. Cabinet-to-cabinet and row-to-row routing should use a dedicated row distance calculator.
