Planning noteConduit fill math is a planning aid. Long routes, multiple bends, pull boxes, jacket friction, bend radius and local code can make a mathematically possible fill impractical or non-compliant.

The calculator treats each cable as a circular cross-section and compares total cable area with conduit internal area.

Fill % = total cable area ÷ conduit internal area × 100

Use cable outside diameter and conduit internal diameter. Nominal sizes, catalogue names and cable counts alone can produce misleading results.

Practical rule

Do not fill to the edge

A route can pass the math but still be hard to pull, hard to service or poor for later changes. Upsize earlier when routes are long or bend-heavy.

FAQ

Conduit fill notes

Can I calculate by cable count only?

No. Cable count is not enough. Cable OD, quantity, conduit ID and target fill are all needed for a useful estimate.

Why does Cat6A reduce capacity so quickly?

Area increases with the square of diameter. A larger outside diameter can reduce the number of cables that fit much faster than expected.

Does this replace local standards?

No. This is a practical planning calculator only. Verify final installation work against local standards, project specifications and qualified engineering judgement.

When should I choose a larger conduit?

Choose a larger conduit when the fill is near target, the route has bends, future changes are likely, or the conduit will be difficult to access later.
