Electrical losses cover UPS, PDU, transformer and switchgear inefficiency. Total facility power is the sum of IT, cooling, losses and lighting. PUE = total ÷ IT; the ideal value is 1.0.

What the calculator does

The calculator sums IT load with the supporting cooling, electrical losses and lighting to get total facility power, then divides by the IT load to give PUE. DCiE is its reciprocal, and overhead is everything that is not useful IT work.

PUE notes

What is a good PUE?

Hyperscale facilities reach 1.1–1.2; well-run enterprise rooms land around 1.4–1.6, while older or small server rooms often exceed 2.0. The right target depends on climate, density and containment.

Instantaneous vs annualised PUE?

A single-moment reading varies with weather and load. The Green Grid recommends an annualised PUE from 12 months of metered energy for fair comparison.

What is DCiE?

Data Center Infrastructure Efficiency is the reciprocal of PUE expressed as a percentage — the share of facility power that reaches IT equipment. DCiE = 1 ÷ PUE × 100%.

Worked example

Inputs: IT load 250 kW, cooling 100 kW, UPS/distribution losses 30 kW, lighting & other 5 kW.

Result: total = 385 kW → PUE = 385 ÷ 250 = 1.54, DCiE = 1 ÷ 1.54 = 64.9 %.
