Terms
- RCDResidual Current Device
- A safety switch that instantly cuts power if it detects electricity leaking to earth — for example through a person or a faulty appliance — protecting against electric shock.
- TN-C-Searthing system type
- A common earthing (grounding) setup where the electricity supplier provides the earth connection combined with the neutral wire, which then splits into separate earth and neutral inside the building. It is the standard setup across most of Germany and the EU.
- TN-Searthing system type
- An earthing setup where the supplier provides a completely separate earth wire and neutral wire all the way from the street into the building — no combining or splitting involved.
Cable Planning Categories
The estimator groups cable lengths into planning buckets only — these are useful for early material discussion, not final cable selection.

Cable Management (Containment) Types

Distribution Concepts

| TN-S / TN-C-S / TN-C / IT system | Earthing system arrangement — determines PE/PEN handling, RCD applicability and bonding requirements |

TN-C combines neutral and protective earth into a single PEN conductor for part of the installation, which restricts RCD use on that section — TN-S keeps them fully separate. Confirm the earthing system with the design engineer before finalising protection strategy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is this a bid or a material take-off?
No. It's a planning-level material reference for early scoping and discussion, not a priced bid or a code-compliant take-off. For a priced bid, use a quantity take-off/estimating tool and a qualified estimator.
How is industrial different from residential planning?
Industrial installations typically use three-phase 400 V distribution with a main board plus sub-distribution boards and feeders between them, dedicated motor/machine circuits, purpose-built cable management (tray, ladder, trunking, busway) and a heavier earthing/bonding scope than a single-phase residential final-circuit layout.
What about cable sizing and protection?

Why does busway need manufacturer verification?
Busway (busbar trunking) current rating, voltage drop and short-circuit withstand are all product-specific — they depend on the exact busway range, enclosure and tap-off configuration. A planning estimate can size the route length, but the electrical rating must always come from the manufacturer's technical data for the selected product.
